The key lies in EIP-712 signatures. Unlike most blockchains where every on-chain interaction requires gas, Hyperliquid allows traders to sign orders off-chain; the chain processes these signed orders without charging gas. In practice, this means every trading action—order placement, cancellation, modification, and settlement—costs nothing in gas.
This is made possible by Hyperliquid's custom L1 architecture. The platform operates a fully on-chain central limit order book (CLOB) through its HyperCore engine. Because the chain is purpose-built for trading rather than general-purpose computation, it can subsidise gas costs for order placement and cancellation, charging only standard trading fees when trades actually execute.
Traders pay only maker and taker fees on executed trades: taker fees start at 0.0405%, and maker fees start at 0.0135%. Volume-based tiering can further reduce these rates, with maker rebates available for liquidity providers.

HLP is a protocol vault that functions as the platform's built-in market maker. It employs algorithmic strategies to manage two-sided order-book quotes, providing continuous liquidity support for traders. When the market lacks buyers or sellers, HLP automatically steps in with quotes or takes on positions, keeping the order book healthy and reducing slippage.

What makes HLP particularly innovative is that it productises market-making能力—users can deposit funds into the HLP vault, and the system executes market-making strategies on their behalf, sharing fees and spread profits with depositors. Founder Jeff Yan, with his background as a quantitative analyst at Hudson River Trading, brought professional market-making expertise to HLP's active management.
For new token listings, Hyperliquid's Hyperliquidity strategy ensures even freshly launched assets have liquidity from day one. When a new HIP-1 token is deployed, the protocol automatically places buy and sell orders within a defined price range, updating roughly every block (approximately every 3 seconds)—effectively a grid market maker that guarantees basic liquidity.

HyperBFT consensus delivers sub-second finality, with most orders confirming in under a second. For validators geographically close to users, the median latency from order placement to finality is 0.2 seconds. The chain processes up to 200,000 orders per second.
Order Types and Tools
Hyperliquid supports a full range of order types: market orders, limit orders, stop-market, stop-limit, TWAP (Time-Weighted Average Price), and scale orders. This gives traders the control they expect from a professional perps platform.
No KYC, Full Self-Custody
Traders can start in seconds—just connect a wallet; the platform never asks for a phone number, email address, or KYC documents. Funds remain in the user's wallet at all times, removing the counterparty risk inherent in centralized exchanges.

The experience is not without its limitations. For micro-second scalpers, the ~1-second block finality adds latency that matters. The open order book means all trades are public and visible—competitors can monitor positions. And for beginners, perpetual futures with high leverage can be complex and intimidating.
